*In the Suburbs*

On a cold and gray Chicago afternoon:
A middle class family decides to move
To the Suburbs…

Trying to find a home to fulfill their needs
But all they get instead is a bunch of trees In the Suburbs…

So they send the youngest child off away to school
But the other kids don’t take to a kid that’s new In the Suburbs…

Never thought to ask these other kids why
Maybe that’s just the way of preppy Junior High In the Suburbs…

Even though the boy never done one wrong
He spends all his time in his room alone In the Suburbs…

The real world teens are really mean
So he finds fake friends on a ten-inch screen
In the Suburbs…

At his old home he would walk through town
Now eighty blocks long and not a single sound In the Suburbs…

People don’t you understand—
The kid needs a life instead…
Or he’ll grow to be
A sad young man someday…
Take a look at you and me — We have other people to see…
While this kid is stuck in the middle of a rut
Now the only life he sees is the neighbor’s mutt…
In the Suburbs.

So he works to break free and gets his degree
Spends a few good years on a college spree…
He works to stay away…
He just needs to — get — paid…
And peace will begin to finally pierce through his
mind…

Got a temporary job, but it didn’t pay much
And now time’s run out and he’s out of luck…

Still dead set on the life he’s never had…
He tries to find a job but the market’s bad…
Now the only thing to show is a bunch of loans
After all that work he ends up right back home… In the Suburbs.

And as his dreams die…
On a cold and gray Chicago afternoon:
Another middle class family decides to move…

To the Suburbs
