Final Volume of Alma Mater Released Friday

We have traveled through the Midwest, the Northeast, and the West. In two days, we head down south for the final installment of the Alma Mater series, which Kirkus Reviews has called “A thoroughly unique project” with “A variety of delightfully unexpected poetic forms.” This volume is the most thought-provoking, powerful, and passionate volume of the series, and for only 99 cents you can make that trip with me. Consider the price a southern-hospitable welcome for anyone of all ages to venture inside to discover or rediscover a love for poetry and of learning about the past and present of new places. And consider this post a direct invitation to join me.

Alma Mater Vol. 4 Released This Friday

This Friday, March 3, the final volume of the Alma Mater series will be released. Kirkus Reviews has described the series as “A thoroughly unique project” with “A variety of delightfully unexpected poetic forms.” I see it as a project that reaches out to millions. Whether college alums, current undergrads, or those who seek to learn more about the country itself or maybe just have a love for poetry. I believe this series has the makings to cross boundaries and go beyond just the genre of poetry.

This series is more than about celebrating life in each of the featured institution. It is about celebrating life itself. Each university covered is but a snapshot of the bigger picture: The capture and embrace of youth, education, beauty, love, and what indeed, what makes each geographic location and specific university special. This is not just a book for college students, and it’s not even just a book for poetry lovers, it is a book for anyone who wants to explore through the eyes of someone else. To see what they see. To live what they live, and to learn more about the human experience as undergone by others around the world.

The series concludes this Friday. But the poetry and the vitality of each institution in all four volumes, will live on.

Scripps College Poem

On Sale Now for Only 99 cents!

*Scripps College*

We’ll start here at the doors of Denison,
Then with the years you’ll go proceed,
To hold each tick as prime as venison,
In gardens where Green shows you’ll succeed.
You’ll stroll daily through shades of flowers,
Be serenaded by the roses of Scripps,
Then to the section that’s Margaret Fowler’s,
Improvising to beauty, never going off Scripps.
Remain in Motley and in Browsing Rooms,
Look out to this glorious place we live,
Segue to trees where sweetness looms,
Then cue friendships where you’ll ad lib.
Remember, the Wooden Doors is where you’ll come in,
If you seize this chance, life’s show will begin:

Take One.

University of the Pacific Tribute

*University of the Pacific*

Reputation. In Stockton, California, for many, it’s all they have.
Reputations have a tendency to follow into the streets like a prowler in the night. And it is known to follow for the rest of your life.
And when it finds you, as it always does,
Tell it you have nothing to run from.

There are men who fight for their reputation.
Today there are just as many willing to kill for it.
Bullets that wound the very name of the beholder more than the fallen victim
who wears the crimson slug. Men who believe that potential harm is what keeps their name strong and feared…blind to the fact that a much greater harm to their community and families has already been committed. What a crime, whether or not people snitch…and from the McGeorge Law School of Pacific, many ferocious Tigers
Defend our community from injustice.

There are good reputations. People who work for a better life for their families—future and current. There are also bad reputations…sometimes bestowed in spite of what’s earned.
When a graduate from McGeorge cleared his brother in an appeal of a double homicide, his brother was then free to reenroll into Pacific

And fight (for it is in the right)….to win back his reputation.

Mount St. Mary’s Tribute

From Alma Mater Vol. 3: The West
On Sale Now for Only 99 cents!
(Link Provided at Bottom)

*Mount St. Mary’s College*

A young father took his daughter for a walk down Hollywood Boulevard
for the very first time. On such a moonlit summer night, she’d
never seen so many stars. For name after name she would stop, clutch tightly to her father’s hand, point down and ask
who were these chosen few.
Her father told her of the singers, movie stars, and famous personalities who each found their way into
Immortality.
Ever the conscientious little girl, the daughter couldn’t help notice a glaring omission.
She asked her father where her mother was. And why her name wasn’t with these stars.
The father reined his emotions to collect a genuine grin; and he remembered Athena, with all her brilliance. She had learned from the best mentors in L.A., how the best reward is neither money nor fame, but the pleasure that is felt from serving others. He stood remembering the way she lived her life to make friends and unknowns feel the way the stars felt…
At the top of the world.

With that, his head shifted from the ground up to the clouds, and told his daughter
Her mother’s up there…

And that she, too, is walking with the stars.

Loyola Marymount University Tribute

From Alma Mater Vol. 3: The West
On Sale Now for Only 99 cents!
(Link Provided at Bottom)

*Loyola Marymount University*

Loyola Marymount Lions trudge out their blue & red lairs to make hunger crawls stall inside Hunger Banquet, Iggy’s, and heat up in shelters like The Den that deliver dark doses of warmth. There’s an emanating nearness coming from this private Los Angeles sector that leaks to outdoor concerts stretching out like barbed wire not in defense of the touch,
but jolts at commence of the touch
that parallels the scope of Paradise in sight. Where the California skies will transcend with us and continue elevating in us via the rose and gold meanderings of westward shifts that informed the young and undirected that the best showcases of California’s arts come from its forecast.
Where the rainclouds dazzle all audiences with its few appearances each year and is credited by name when onlookers applaud its colorful performance after the rain bows.

All the Lions’ acts of faith and justice have led to:
The Cerulean Climax that never concludes.

But at this penultimate end we see the ultimate has already been penned
in His pictorial magnum opus of California.

So although a greater paradise awaits,
if this is our last station ’fore the gates,
then gratefully,
We’ll wait.

Mills College Tribute

From Alma Mater Vol. 3: The West
On Sale Now for Only 99 cents!
(Link Provided at Bottom)

*Mills College*

There are many ways to experience the bay area. Many destinations. Many paths to take.
There are many ways to get an expansive college education.
Many different routes to take in the liberal arts that will each lead to the pavement of success.
There are endless ways to think critically, and to communicate visions to the cataracts of the world outside.
There are so many different ways to appreciate art, literature, California, and finally, to discover your talents.
There are many different ways to better yourself, and to make the world better yourself.
But as the great many of the world’s artists, scholars, and thinkers who first worked and sweat at Mills still say:
The east shore of the San Francisco Bay:
Is the only way home.

Hurry, hurry, make haste.
Harness inspiration’s thrill,
Then, with triggered feet,
Make these wooded acres
Feel your rush.

Cyclones, this is the One Destination
Where the path to the clouds
Is your rapid storm.

Long Beach State University Tribute

From Alma Mater Vol. 3: The West
On Sale Now for Only 99 cents!
(Link Provided at Bottom)

*The Beach*

like The Color Purple fading from bleach,
Life has truths and so does college:
Students will play, Professors will teach,
And both of the above has brought us to The Beach.

An affordable education and plenty of fun,
Is why 49ers dig this school,
Plus plenty of water, plenty of sun,
And plenty of others choosing to come.

Over 30,000 rep’ Long Beach State,
And every year there’s another Gold Rush,
Beach Bunnies and Beach Bods are used as bait,
Jaws emerge hungry to suck then mate.

♫Da-Nun……Da-Nun……Da-Nun-Nun-Nun-Nun-Nun♫

When Jaws suck in it’s the people that’s coming,
So many willing preys is why so many came,
Freshmen rush down like indoor plumbing,
And every semester, more meat is forthcoming.

The Beach Dirtbags bully foes when it’s sunny,
Which on our mound, is all year round,
And we got Dirtbags who won’t steal your lunch money,
But they will steal your babe then go to lunch with your honey.

On campus at the Nugget or somewhere up the coast,
With so many girls to every guy, no guy is safe!
It’s every girl for herself, so some guys play with dos,
Some thought they found el uno but they’re not even close.

But like true 49ers, we have to keep looking!
While looking at marvels like the Walter Pyramid,
The 18-story brilliance that promotes a grand booking:
School spirit boiling over from 5,000 spirits cooking.

We’re Monsoon Maniacs and this school is pipin’ hot,
This arena, the people—hell, just surf the crowd!
You’ll see fit surfers and tanned girls on the spot,
All who came to college in Cali ripe & hot.

There’s a glow when we touch: i.e.—E.T,
If you’re not a 49er you’re Raiders of a Lost Spark,
This school is always hot even with the A.C.,
This is the heat wave that has plagued the LB.

like Gold & Black never fading to bleach,
Life has truths and so does college:
Cali’s at its best when it commutes to the Beach,
And when you get here, let me hear, “Go Beach!”
