Walking through fires like friars & Observants,
To the Red & Gray every wolf is fond,
And through Franciscan values: We are all servants.
You don’t have to be Catholic to live these values,
Only do what is necessary to reach & show love,
No, there is no appraisal on peaceful values,
Just find the world’s hatred then teach & sow love.
Then to better days these hearts will beat anew,
’Tis better to give back than to receive a royal fee,
Cardinal Stritch is known as the bridge between you and do:
“The Bridge between where you are and where you want to be.”
It’s true that life’s best things are free—and when afterlife rings:
We’ll learn to value the even better things.

University of South Dakota Poem

From Alma Mater Vol. 1: The Midwest. Available Now!

On a mid-February day in the heart of mating season,
A Coyote approached with red and white adorned,
Not to hunt but to appeal to reason.
He knew
Love is often timid like a coy dog,
Until the right hybrid like a coydog,
The Yotes formed a band & made a pact,
Then jumped the broom like a game of leapfrog.
They met on South Dakota’s vermilion plains
And solidified this pact—near The Old Main.
Right in Danforth Chapel they said each vow—
With an ardent and tender howl.
The Coyote is sly, cunning, and dangerous,
He can rip open the heart with lethal tears,
Like when the Coyote told the beautiful stranger,
“Coyotes work best in pairs.”
And from that day forward they roamed as one,
In gentle habits as well as hunting Jackrabbits,
It takes a heavy heart to fill the hunger of a Coyote,
And in South Dakota, there’s no heart like a Coyote’s.
Twenty years have passed and these Coyotes still bleed
South Dakota Red and South Dakota White,
Now they have returned—not as students,
But as Coyotes—Husband & Wife.
They return to the Homecoming plains,
Beneath the first beams of their love’s great rays,
Though many years have passed, it all remains,
They still love these great
Dakota Days.

I’ll listen like no one has —
Before you know — Three hours pass…

That’s why I’m far from being out of gas.
Gabby Blondes, a Rambling Lush —
Ellen Degeneres, Craig Ferguson…
Had I not been so out of practice —
I could’ve held my own with anyone.
I Can Hand Hold the Best Conversation!
I Know I Can, I Know I Can!
I did when I was Growing Up,
So I know this mouth can Yak Again.
Do not be fooled by my reticence,
I’d be glad to offer my two cents…
Once I’m rid of these distractions —
This void will fill interactions!

Lunchroom Conversations,
Picnics with familiar relations,
Pick the occasion or the setting:
My attention Spans
Parks to Serengeti.

I’d Rule the Art of Conversation,
Clyde’s not in, it’s “Your Royal Highness…”
This Call I Cannot Answer,
because My Life Rings of Awkward Silence.

South Dakota carries frequent forecasts
that fall far below zero. Record-breaking winters
with severe snowstorms, blizzards, and whiteouts
that bend the mind to the chilling degree that even
South Dakotans have reservations about completing their reservations
To inhabit the SDSU reservation.
Welcome, New Jackrabbits,
Have no fear,
The Gate to Greatness—
Begins here.

It begins in Meadows North,
Meadows South,
Abbott and Brown Hall
At the mouth,
Through corn fields
Supple with loyal hue,
The yellow & blue
Will guide you through.
At the heart of the most ferocious climate,
The warmth that resides will help you climb it.
High enough to view faces from today and yesterday
During the celebration of Hobo Day.
Allow the Bummobile to be your snowmobile
To help you travel through our proud tradition,
The Coughlin Campanile will help inspire you
To reach the summit of life’s exhibition.
Ring the Bell! Cheer for South Dakota!
South Dakota State has a combusting engine
That lights a March through the snowy path,
In this fire
We gather the wrath;
Make Way
for
The Pride of the Dakotas.

“Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.”
Well,
God knows that it is necessary to find happiness.
And the promise of our college experience isn’t dependent on the government and is not limited to just our education.
We encourage all graduating high-school seniors to come to Athens.
Our generation has been called the Voices of Promise,
So believe when we tell you your life will forever be changed.
But these moments won’t last forever.

So our mortality conflicts with our morality.

Closure

A friend of mine once told me that
There is no such thing as closure.
When they’re done, they’re done,
That’s It,
It’s Over.
It’d sure be nice if it was more like the Soap Operas.
I don’t mean the yelling and the drama and the throwing stuff…
It’d be nice to know that you’d see that face again, and that whatever is meant to be —
Will Be,
And whatever happens — there will be closure.
It’d be nice to saunter aimlessly about town and end up on a pier at the same time the woman on your mind is just standing there, looking out into the water…all by herself…
With Absolutely No One Else Around.
That’d sure be nice.
To have that kind of timing, and for it to be out of our hands.
Only in real life this never happens, instead the weeks go by as we await a phone call from the one who has to deep down recognize the error of their ways…or at least have the courtesy to discuss their
conclusion.
But the phone never rings.
I’d like to just take a walk through the park in an empty town designed only to unscramble empty pieces and puzzling endings and find the same woman a week or so later. Once again. All by herself.
And not even be like,
“Oh my God. You again!? What are the odds!?”
But just simply state,
“Hi. How are you?”
All…Matter-of-Fact Like.
Then we’d pick up where we left off at the pier.
And if it must keep happening at the park, or the same pier over and over again, or best yet — an empty bar, that’s my favorite…then so be it. It will continue to happen because in this world, our guardian angels refuse to let us go out like that. They will see to it that we get that closure we so richly deserve.
And after everything is finally out and settled…suddenly, that park, the pier, and the only local bar in town suddenly become even emptier…or much more crowded.
And the face is gone as it should be.
Like a relationship purgatory that didn’t know where to go, but is now finally wherever it belongs, and out of your life.
It may be awkward at times, but it’d sure be nice to have a little closure. To find out what went wrong without always being the one to pick up the phone.
Or better yet, to say an amicable goodbye and sincerely reflect on memories one last time.
Yeah, that would be nice.
Almost as if thinking about the other person wills it into happening.
If it were like that down here, then
I would’ve seen her Every Single Day…
Until there was closure.

I don’t think I’d be the only one.
Those parks would be as packed as Wrigley, those piers as crowded as Navy, and those bars would have
*Capacity Met*
Yes, yes, yes, it’d be Nice to have just a little closure.
But that’s why it’s a Soap Opera.
Because here in this lonesome town:

The Phone Never Rings.

Cleveland State University Poem

CSU is where Engaged Learning happens,
For two Vikings, this is where it began:
In the classroom of Cleveland, Ohio,
The learning environment where Vikings grow.
These two Vikings took real-world experience
To advance their careers and push one another
To experience a love & a love for the city,
And shove into a deep as great as the Erie.
They danced in the East Fourth Street District,
Joined in restaurants on West 6th and West 9th,
They danced more at Barflyy & Anatomy,
These downtown lights join the Academy—
In a ride of art, museums, and love,
Under the lights of Progressive—
Is where they fell in love.
On this four-year anniversary, right before graduation,
In the stands on college night: there’s a new celebration…
On the big screen during the 7th inning stretch,
He proposed, she accepted, cheers rang from the decks!
Like their future careers, these Vikings’ love paid,
It was in CSU’s class where they first were engaged.
