*University of Illinois at Springfield*

Twoscore and four years ago,
In this,
Our State’s Capital,
This university was created for our sons of the freedom
our forefathers fought so heroically to pass down.
The very same freedom that has been embedded in the foundation of this house, adjacent the pillars of integrity, honesty, and
Equality for all women and men…
With a belief that every man and woman should strive to be so great, that even the most judicious of men should question this—the most absolute law.
For what is a nation without constituents who continue to dispute history’s limitations of man? Lost stars that we all must break from nature’s bondage,
so that as servants of the links to freedom,
We may chase the vast glory that waits in the prairie.

University of Chicago Poem

*Chicago*

Inquiring minds want to know:
What is behind this city of wind, towers, and freight?
This freeway of sweat. The Ivy Terrace above Make.
Then the question shifts to who are behind it?
Is it the Michael Jordans? Champions who have defied time and gravity to unceasingly expand the earth with their flight? Is it weavers of words? Entertainers and messengers like Cooke, Kelly, West, and Winfrey? Is it pizza makers? The butchers and architects?
Is it Gangsters like Al Capone?
Or is it Maroons like Eliot Ness?

Maroons inside Gordon Center research, debate,
then prepare to create—
Just as knowledge grows more and more,
“So be human life enriched.”
It’s the reward of discovery, not the notoriety—
That makes the student rich.

As the leading institution of the Midwest,
It is our duty to share our wealth,
Found in this privileged soil of Chicago,
Knowledge uplifted to help the nation grow.

Each morning they rise from the ashes and disperse into the campus that works. A scavenger hunt for stats, facts, and artifacts—a measure that starts and closes at Cobb Gate. The quadrangle nests the informed and the learned, with questers who leave no gothic stone unturned. They feed at Hutch Commons on pieces and scraps adapting masked knowledge to a
Smart Museum of Art.
They occupy 400,000 square feet of science to reinvent and shape this city’s intellectual gem.
And like the Chi-Press & Eliot Ness—
This Jewel of the Midwest remains untouchable.

The Real Story Behind Roman Reigns

On Tuesday, news broke of Roman Reigns’ suspension for 30 days due to a violation of WWE’s Wellness Policy…but that’s not the real story. For months, whenever Roman Reigns’ name has been mentioned, what takes the lead is the reaction he has been receiving from the fans for the entire year. But how could THAT be the story when it was predictable once it became clear that Reigns would be “The Guy”? This story isn’t new. It’s in reruns. Muscle-bound main eventer=Boos. Any world-champion wrestling style with a power base=Inevitable chants of “You can’t wrestle.” Wrestling fans can be terribly obnoxious. And as learned from the above formulas, they are very predictable. So why on earth are they the story? How the wrestling media continues to ignore this formula and act as if it’s anything personal to Roman Reigns or something new…yeah, there might be a story there.

What everyone must understand is that the seemingly majority of wrestling fans are not only fickle, but they are blatantly full of it. Take someone like John Cena. For years the major criticisms against him has been his “Five Moves of Doom,” and the desire for him to turn heel. John Cena himself once stated on camera that regardless of what he changed he would “never win those fans over” because they already made up their minds. But John was wrong. He will continue to get a polarizing reaction filled with “CENA SUCKS” chants not necessarily because he hasn’t won them over…after all, it’s obvious that Cena has improved every single year as a wrestler, as showcased with the multiple United States Open Invitational matches and his very, very long and underappreciated list of classics throughout the years. The reason Cena continues to receive this reaction is because it’s tradition. It’s simply tradition to chant “CENA SUCKS” and boo him whenever possible. Many times, during a John Cena promo, you rarely hear a boo, because the fans are, perhaps begrudgingly, enjoying yet another great promo. They only resume the chants during his entrance and his matches. To attribute any other reason for this reaction other than it being blind tradition is giving the wrestling audience too much credit. Nobody is that stubborn or blind to the fact that Cena has earned the respect of the WWE Universe and any wrestling fan with his hard work, dedication, mic work, and in-ring improvements. As for the “heel” criticism, that is living proof of how arbitrary the fan reaction is. Babyfaces are held to a much higher standard for earning cheers. The best way to turn someone into a face is to make them a heel first. We’ll call that the Stone Cold Steve Austin precedent. To attempt to say, “Here is your guy to cheer for,” is to sabotage him, perhaps eternally. There was a time when someone who received bad reactions from the audience would always have a chance to win over the good graces of the fans with hard work and great performances. But there is no such thing as earning the fans’ respect anymore….especially if you are a power wrestler who has found success in the social-media age. It’s the age of memes, trolling, and criticism—where negativity is just more fun. Reigns is just the latest scapegoat in the WWE. Reigns has shone in many, many matches over the past two years against the likes of Bray Wyatt, Daniel Bryan, AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, and most recently, Seth Rollins. Respect has nothing to do with the reaction and how any intelligent wrestling reporter does not see this…yeah, now there’s something that ought to be reported, hence this very post you are reading. Has Roman Reigns really changed that much since his big pops in 2014? Nope. Same guy. If anything, he has improved noticeably. But once he became MORE than the same guy, but THE guy, that is when the trolls crawled out. The thing is, they AREN’T really haters. If they were, Romans would have always received this reaction…including when he won the World Championship from Sheamus in Philadelphia live on Monday Night Raw. Instead, the roof nearly collapsed from the cheers. Who are we kidding? Just like with Cena, there is no real logic. Can we please just acknowledge that and move on?

To Roman Reigns, I hope that the brass and your peers have stated the obvious to you…but since the media won’t, I will: The fan reaction has nothing to do with you. Pro wrestling is a world where the big guys get to be bullied whenever extra success and babyface expectations is put on them. Once you realize that it is nothing personal, no matter what troll tells you otherwise, you will see that you are doing an awesome job out there.

To everyone else…although the media needs to be put on notice that there is nothing new in this story of wrestling fans booing a power wrestling main-eventer this decade for attention and in tradition, that is not the story either. There are two stories here: The first is that the WWE has outsmarted the fans and have finally taken steps to evolve their product. The best way to adapt to the fickle fans who can’t be manipulated to cheer for whom they want is to make the concept of heel/face secondary if not non-existent. We’ve finally seen signs of this and it has been long overdue. A world where the WWE is no longer this simplistic good guy vs. bad guy scenario that Vince promised us that we’d move on from on December 15, 1997. Vince stated that good guys vs. bad guys was passé; and finally, nearly 20 years later, it seems like he may finally be prepared to follow-up on that promise. Because although Steve Austin was a foul-mouthed middle-finger waving rebel, let’s face it, he was clearly a face, thus a “good guy.” And the WWE never truly had the guts to follow through on Vince’s address. But with Roman Reigns stating repeatedly that he’s not a good guy, and not a bad guy, as the apparent franchise player for the WWE, it is a game-changing statement. And for Seth Rollins, who upon his return made it clear that the fans can boo him or cheer him, it doesn’t matter…that, too, speaks to this shift that is happening. But even with this progress happening before our eyes, the media continues to be a few steps behind. Because if Roman is not a good guy, then the boos literally mean nothing. The wrestling media, however, seems to be falling into the trap of the attention-seekers and ignoring the fact that the WWE has adjusted its product to outsmart its fickle audience.

Finally, the major story is one that has happened and is set To Be Continued. It’s the story of how in spite of those who have tried to sabotage his career, Roman HAS reigned….and that after this very ill-timed setback with the Wellness Policy violation…. I think I speak for all of Roman Reigns’ supporters when I say that there is no doubt in my mind that Roman will learn from this mistake and return even stronger where in this new era of the WWE, he will lead even wiser and strengthen his reign of the WWE empire…while Roman Empire continues to advance for what will assuredly be a never-ending war of One vs. All.

It is Time to Withdraw or Convert the Money in the Bank

Since 2005, Money in the Bank has captivated the WWE Universe. From a spectating standpoint, the appeal is easy to see. It’s the match that has the biggest spots, the most OMG moments, and is always drenched in suspense. And even long after the outcome, fans are always agog for that moment when the superstar with the briefcase cashes in the MITB contract to, almost always, receive the ultimate payout of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The most exhilarating cash-ins have been when the fans were not expecting it. These moments certainly create an electric buzz in the audience that explodes the instant it happens, and continues into the days long after. But when is enough enough? With the athletic talent on the WWE roster being as great as it has ever been, the MITB ladder match still has plenty of juice left to be squeezed out. But as impressive and enthralling all the high spots and athletic feats always found in this match may be, when do the “Oh my Gods” of the cash-ins become “Oh God, not this again”? At what point is MITB limited to just the physicality of the match and no longer the larger purpose behind it?  Money in the Bank has spent up its value and needs to learn when it’s time to cash out all its winnings over the past ten years…before, not after, it is the investment of the viewers that goes belly up.

There have been 15 Money in the Bank winners, and 13 of them used the same sneak-attack approach to cashing in. When Edge cashed in his briefcase at New Year’s Resolution 2006, his career was permanently catapulted to main-event status. His moniker of “The Ultimate Opportunist” would become more than a catchy nickname, but a branch of philosophy for future bankers to follow: Ultimate Opportunism. Indeed, just as Ultimate Opportunism helped Edge become a main eventer and eventually a legend, it did the same for CM Punk, and also provided the same opportunity for superstars like Jack Swagger and The Miz. Swagger and Miz may not have had as long a run as A-listers, but they both spiced up the title picture—with Miz even going on to headline and win a Wrestlemania main event. When you look at the success the MITB match has had on both the career front and storyline front, the benefit of the match is clear: It makes stars in ways no other concept has ever done. Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler and Alberto Del Rio are three other bankers who enjoyed success at the top at varying durations. What each of the Ultimate Opportunists have in common is that they all shocked the world…not with their victories, but with their timing. They shook the wrestling world with a title change at the most unexpected times. But the shock has worn off. When is the time to say, “OK. Enough already”? The MITB concept could not end without a Wrestlemania cash-in. Well, that has happened. And we’ve had enough shockers in the past decade to last us a lifetime. Money in the Bank’s time is up and the time is now, so if no one else will say it, I will: Enough already.

Call me old school, but can we just have big-fight-feel matches that won’t get ruined by a shock that has now lost its jolt? When you have the biggest match of the year at ’Mania disrupted by a cash-in, and you rob the fans of a Roman Reigns/Brock Lesnar ending…then what should result is the culmination of the MITB concept. After seeing how this cash-in has helped Seth Rollins’ career, it’s easy to see a different point of view; but there is a way to continue MITB without it being at the expense of classic moments/matches. And one man has been in the only two cash-ins that demonstrate how it can be done.

There have only been three full-blown matches for a World title after a MITB cash-in. John Cena has been in all three. Once as a challenger, and twice as a champion. Rob Van Dam announced that he would cash-in his MITB briefcase at Extreme Rules 2006…and it only helped the build-up to the match. The same can be said for John Cena’s challenging of CM Punk on Raw 1,000. The loss of the surprise component did not depreciate the value of the briefcase…in fact, it lifted it…because a big build-up developed from the announcement. In the case of Damien Sandow, although he tried the “Ultimate Opportunist” route, a full match also resulted from it. What the fans got was an unexpected classic with a heightened suspense that would not have been there if Sandow faced Cena in any other environment. So perhaps the solution isn’t to eliminate Money in the Bank but to change the terms of the contract. Vince McMahon could announce that he is tired of superstars taking the cowardly path to the WWE Championship. That he has worked for everything that he has and superstars should do the same instead of exploiting the MITB contract as an easy way to the top. From now on, superstars must give no less than 24 hours’ notice of when they are cashing in their Money in the Bank contract. Advance notice is what happened with Cena/RVD and Cena/Punk, and both matches were enhanced by the build-up with MITB laying the appreciated groundwork. With this prior notice, the shock factor will leave, but after ten years, isn’t it gone already? It is time for the Money in the Bank cash-in to accrue interest, instead of splurging it in a few seconds.

The truth is, the Money in the Bank match reduces the value of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. This has been a justifiable sacrifice since it has created bona fide main eventers in the process. But much like The King of the Ring tournament (and I’m going to ignore the sad attempt at reviving the tournament last year), which was also known to help raise superstars to the next level, it has run its course. Can we really imagine a WWE where superstars are still doing surprise cash-ins yet another ten years from now? It is time for the WWE to withdraw the Money in the Bank…or convert the contract to terms that raise the value not only of the superstar…but of the superstar, the MITB-produced championship match, and the world title itself. Why increase the value of just one element when you can do so on three different fronts? From an economic standpoint, a pre-announced cash-in will draw intrigue into the anticipated event; and if the current contract holder is one the brass finds deserving of a world title run, they could still have him win in a fluky fashion if the superstar is not ready to win cleanly. This way, the company would have capitalized on the interest that led up to the match, instead of repeating the same formula that will inevitably lose as much money as it has already the trembling flow the bank once held.

University of Maryland Baltimore County Poem

*UMBC*

The two days that validate your existence:
The day that you are born,
And the day that you start living.

Lovers learn that life begins when
they find the other life form
that was born to be with them.
There are many ways to uncover love…
Finding that someone through chemistry,
and discovering life in Baltimore together…
Is the Scientific Method.

First questioning where on earth
they have been for the past two decades,
but after concluding that what matters
is the here and now…
It can be marked as an excused absence.
They then gather information on one another
through study dates inside the library…
They hypothesize that this will be a strong bond;
If through it all, they can stay together.
This is tested not only by time together…but time apart.
Going out with friends on Thursdays to the Fish Head Cantina…
Having film nights with buddies down the hall in the dorms…
Or taking the roommate to Flat Tuesdays for Happy Hour
after a long day of lectures…
The analysis of the data is that even when in other company,
they remained a conjoined particle.
They then experiment new things together:
Different Foods of Market Street in the Commons
from sushi to Famiglia Pizza,
Enjoying great student bands at
Quad Mania with a love that amplifies
with every shared song.

Love is a test with different answers and many trick questions,
but for two to find the same answer without cheating
Is when you’ve found it…
And yes, it takes
True Grit.

And after you’ve proven the results,
Then you can go on and
Tell the world.

For most, life does not begin
till there is love,
and certainly life does not exist
without love…
And when college life seems lost
Due to lack of activity,
and it needs such science
to produce new believers,
Love is here—yes it is found…
for
We—are the Retrievers.

Morgan State University Poem

From Alma Mater Vol. 2: The Northeast
Available Now for only 99 cents!
(Link Provided at End of Piece)

*Morgan State*

It’s an Iota house party on a Friday night,
and as its tempo begins to pick up,
bodies begin to move.
Anybody who’s been to a college party
knows that dances do not last for long.
Partners may change before the song is over
or at the most
go through the night
into bedrooms where the rhythm is
heightened. For two members of the
MSU Modern Dance Ensemble,
they have danced together into places
even the most keen performance spectator
remained oblivious. Under violet stage lights
set to “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” by Alicia,
with the attendance capacity for two’s love
set to their new record.
They’ve learned from the best marching band in the state
how to move in unison. They agreed not to play the heart
like a trumpet, but to find true love’s highest playing card & trump it.
The wall at this frat party is lined with bystanders.
Watching the sweat fly as bodies connect for
a temporary spark. Indeed love is a hard grind,
it takes more than sweat for its tiles to secure,
both sides must work the floor.
The dancers danced into the night after one of their
more provocative performances,
and for their four years at MSU, they kept dancing.
They danced on for a lifetime of laughter, grandchildren,
and song,
and found a permanent home in one another’s love.
One left the party when it was her time,
And the other’s steps were not far behind.
With the heavenly sounds of MSU’s choir
still in them,
they had something to dance to when they leapt
into one another’s arms…
and into their
Homecoming.

In the Suburbs

AOM I

*In the Suburbs*

On a cold and gray Chicago afternoon:
A middle class family decides to move
To the Suburbs…

Trying to find a home to fulfill their needs
But all they get instead is a bunch of trees In the Suburbs…

So they send the youngest child off away to school
But the other kids don’t take to a kid that’s new In the Suburbs…

Never thought to ask these other kids why
Maybe that’s just the way of preppy Junior High In the Suburbs…

Even though the boy never done one wrong
He spends all his time in his room alone In the Suburbs…

The real world teens are really mean
So he finds fake friends on a ten-inch screen
In the Suburbs…

At his old home he would walk through town
Now eighty blocks long and not a single sound In the Suburbs…

People don’t you understand—
The kid needs a life instead…
Or he’ll grow to be
A sad young man someday…
Take a look at you and me — We have other people to see…
While this kid is stuck in the middle of a rut
Now the only life he sees is the neighbor’s mutt…
In the Suburbs.

So he works to break free and gets his degree
Spends a few good years on a college spree…
He works to stay away…
He just needs to — get — paid…
And peace will begin to finally pierce through his
mind…

Got a temporary job, but it didn’t pay much
And now time’s run out and he’s out of luck…

Still dead set on the life he’s never had…
He tries to find a job but the market’s bad…
Now the only thing to show is a bunch of loans
After all that work he ends up right back home… In the Suburbs.

And as his dreams die…
On a cold and gray Chicago afternoon:
Another middle class family decides to move…

To the Suburbs
