Roo-Root for the Roos,
Raise the Gold,
Surf the Blue,
In hostile terrain—
Move past the Boos,
They couldn’t walk a mile
In the Roo Crew’s Shoes.

Son,
When you get to Kansas City,
Make your own way as you follow my footsteps.
I want you to call me any time,
At a moment’s notice I’ll be at your doorstep.
Go and make the most of that beautiful city—
Enjoy the barbecue, the culture, the art,
Be mindful that like you’ll be for me:
You will be in America’s Heart.
Son, you don’t have to go Greek,
Remember, you can always carve your own letters,
Keep fostering that unlimited talent you have,
And in no time, your words will be in New Letters.
Hop at the chance to go see the many fountains,
Then at the Crossroads you’ll be joined by another,
When back on campus go to the Pierson Auditorium,
That’s where I met your mother.
Son, these will be your most cherished years,
And I’ll be here at home—rooting for you,
And one more thing, Son, before you go:
Be sure to
Root for the Roos.

Roo-Root for the Roos,
Raise the Gold,
Surf the Blue,
In hostile terrain—
Move past the Boos,
They couldn’t walk a mile
In the Roo Crew’s Shoes.

Roo-Root for the Roos,
Raise the Gold,
Surf the Blue,
In hostile terrain—
Move past the Boos,
They couldn’t walk a mile
In the Roo Crew’s Shoes.

Maryville University Poem

*Maryville University*

Go—Tell it on the mountain,
And over our hills that
Maryville is mounting.
Moving through suburban trails to everywhere,
The Red, Black & White our Saints adorn.
Through the Sacred Heart our start was born.
Now the colors of our hearts spread everywhere.

The Maryville family is moving,
Awakening the lakes of Missouri with sails,
The efforts of our students in scholarship tells
That even athletes with scholarships are always improving.
Our athletes graduate at a rate that shatters
Past records of performance with rigorous training,
Beneath the weight of knowledge in our library hanging,
Our jocks crush & hush stereotypical chatter.
From these quiet trails our Saints reform
A small vedette to vast faith we stand & guard,
Name any unreachable standard,
Then this miracle we will
Over-Perform.

Why New Year’s is the Most Underrated Holiday in America

OK, let’s cut to the chase and get right to the point here: New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day is the most underrated holiday in the country. I’m not going to sit here and debate about whether or not it’s the best, that is a matter of opinion (it is). This is about how underrated the holiday is supported with pretty solid logic.

  1. New Year’s is the only holiday that basically is celebrated in two different days. Just, let that sink in.
  2. It is the most historic holiday.

No other holiday is more entrenched in history than New Year’s. What am I talking about, you ask? Is New Year’s a holiday about being thankful as inspired by the pilgrims who were grateful to pillage land from the Native Americans? Is New Year’s a holiday that celebrates the birth of many people’s lord and savior? Is New Year’s a holiday that celebrates the independence of this great country of ours? Nope, but guess what, it’s still more historic. Because at the end of the day, all history begins with a marker of time. ALL history begins with when it happened and what the world was like when it happened. Every new year, there is a new marker of the world’s progress and the state of the world.

3. It is the least divisive holiday.

There are no debates about whether to say, “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays.” There are no debates about whether the holiday is morally tainted because a race of people were robbed of their land. It’s just a holiday to either party the hardest your body can possibly endure, OR to stay in and enjoy with your family. There is no division. Just booze, sex, reflection, inspiration for the year ahead, and family. And usually, we ALL experience at least ONE of those things on this two-day holiday extravaganza.

The two biggest criticisms of the New Year’s holidays are that people are pathetic or ridiculous for making New Year’s resolutions when they could have been making the changes all along. The other criticism is that there are too many drunkards who flood the streets and it is unsafe. First, let’s begin with the resolution criticism. What inspires anyone should be no damn concern to you. There. Matter addressed. Next, if you want to stay away from drunken people or drunk drivers, then spend time with the family! Reflect over the year you just went through and survived! YOU MADE IT THROUGH ANOTHER DAMN YEAR! IT’S LIKE A SECOND BIRTHDAY FOR EVERYBODY! CELEBRATE THAT SHIT! I’m going to say it again in case you missed it: New Year’s is a second birthday for EVERYBODY. In fact, I should make a follow-up post to this where I come up with New Year’s rituals to help families reflect and celebrate the holiday the right way! Maybe that will help stop this holiday from being so under-appreciated. Maybe while we’re at it, we should exchange goddamn gifts on New Year’s too. Maybe then it will have your respect….fuck.

New Year’s is awesome. It has the biggest parties, the best fashion, and the most pulse. It has the history of the 4th of July, the reflection of Thanksgiving, the impetus to celebrate and spend time with family akin to Christmas, the sexiness of Halloween….man it has everything. And, now, the final reason why New Year’s is the most underrated holiday, and one that I feel is perhaps the most overlooked:

– It’s only anticipated for like FIVE DAYS!

Christmas TOOOOOTALY steals the crap out of New Year’s thunder. Sure, people will make travel arrangements before these five days, they’ll even make plans ahead of time. But the holiday season is totally Bogarted by Christmas. In a perfect world, Christmas really WOULD be in July so that New Year’s would get the respect and anticipation it deserves.

Oh, and how awesome is the countdown!? The freakin’ ball! Auld Lang Syne! MAYYYNE, YA’LL ARE DEAD-ASS, DROOL-IN-THE-MOUTH SLEEP ON NEW YEAR’S, and I, for one, am bringing attention to this travesty!

So here’s what you’re all going to do. You’re going to take tomorrow, either spend it with loved ones or go out and have the best time you can possibly have. You also will use this marking of time to motivate yourself for the exciting new year that awaits while reflecting back on the last. And most importantly, you ALL are going to agree to the following New Year’s resolution:

STOP TAKING THIS AWESOME TWO-DAY HOLIDAY FOR GRANTED NEXT YEAR!!

Now THAT, is one resolution that doesn’t seem so damn hard to keep.

Dear Atheists, Christmas is a Christian Holiday. Deal with it.

Hypocrisy

I grew up in a Christian household. The religion was indoctrinated in me along with all the ancillaries of it: Sunday school, Easter, a religious elementary school, and of course, that magical time of the year: Christmas! There was never a day of the year that felt more special than December 25th-which unwrapped the feeling of getting up before sunrise to dash downstairs, open all the gifts and share this enthusiasm with my siblings. Today, I am agnostic. I believe in a higher power (whether past or ever-present), but I do not know the most rudimentary fact about this entity, and I certainly don’t know if he/she/it has a son named Jesus. Therefore, I find it hypocritical to celebrate a Christian holiday without being a Christian. So why don’t atheists?

90% of Americans celebrate Christmas according to a Pew Research poll. Yet only 71% of Americans are Christians. That means 19% of Americans are Christmas Crashers. Jesus Cheaters. Math is not my strong suit but one does not have to be John Nash to know that adds up to millions of ’em. I have known atheists who go out of their way to ridicule the intellect of Christians and mock their faith, only to just as overtly celebrate and promote the biggest day of the religion. Could there BE a more blatant display of hypocrisy?? The most common defense to their celebration is, “Christmas has nothing to do with religion for me. It’s just a holiday to spend with the family and it takes me back to my childhood.” Aside from the fact that they conveniently omit the fact that they are showered with gifts…though, to be fair, they in large part selflessly shower others with gifts as well…this argument is a negligent one for many reasons. For one, you don’t get to redefine something that is historically, syntactically, and fucking OBVIOUSLY what it appears to be. And further, it is negligent due to the glaring hypocrisy of many atheists.

The Propaganda Hypocrisy: You know, there are lots of atheists who celebrate Christmas and fail to say an ill word about the religion. This section is not aimed at them; although they are far from being exonerated…I’ll get to them next. But let’s get the biggest offenders out of the way first. Those who openly and repeatedly mock those who believe in a God, or, as many have gibingly coined him, “The Flying Spaghetti Monster.” Many of these atheists accuse Christianity of injecting our youth at an early age with the shrapnel of tradition when they are most vulnerable and apt to follow along blindly to the ways and beliefs of their parents. They also are the first to smear Christians with the stereotype of being overly assertive with their religion–forcing it down anyone’s throat who opens their mouth to utter even a syllable of blasphemic rhetoric. In short, they accuse Christians of aiming to brainwash society—more successfully the youth, and successfully or not: attempting to do so at the annoyance of the secular masses. But here’s where the hypocrisy comes in: These atheists are HELPING spread Christianity also! So even if Christians WERE attempting to brainwash anyone, by taking part in its biggest holiday, these atheists are helping them do it! Christmas is like the Super Bowl of Christianity. Much like the NFL, even if many are not a fan of the sport, they still will tune in to the Super Bowl because of its popularity and all the pomp and beguilement of the event. And with that popularity comes a sense of…belonging. Of not feeling left out. That’s human. What’s douchey is talking trash about the sport for 364 days of the year and then taking part in its biggest celebration just because of the benefits that come with it. And it’s triple the douche factor when we are talking about a subject as sacred as religion. For every person who participates in Christmas, they foster the popularity of it. And every year Christmas maintains its unparalleled popularity, the religion gets a free plug. It continues to solidify itself in the minds of children…and therefore future generations…and continues to squeeze in a yearly ad on the brainpages of all Americans–secular and pious alike. If, according to these atheists, Christianity and all its sects—from the extremists to the just plain obnoxiously preachy—do nothing but spread propaganda every chance they get to promote their religion like many colonists before them (and let’s not even get started on THAT), then in celebrating Christmas, wouldn’t these atheists, as true hypocrites blind to their own hypocrisy, be helping them do so?!

General Principle for the General Population: There are true believers in Christianity. Is it just me or should Christmas be their day? Their celebration? The spirit of Christmas is about sharing, so “true” Christians do not mind sharing this holiday with atheists. But dammit, they should! Even if the offense is only extracted from the hypocrites described in the paragraph above. There are Christians who go to church often, pray regularly, and most importantly, simply believe. The way I see it, Christmas should be for them. The gifts. The lights. That damn tree. All of it should be for Christians because they earned it, and have paid their dues….even if the only toll was the fee of belief.

The Exception: There is a plausible exception, however. If one is in a relationship, it does make perfect sense to take part in the Christmas festivities so that one’s partner does not miss out on celebrating his/her holiday to the fullest. Consider this a “guest pass.” A “plus one” if you will. Relationships are about making sacrifices, and celebrating the joys of the Christmas season and holiday with that special someone is a “sacrifice” that seems very easy to make. If, however, an atheist chooses not to celebrate the holiday, relationship or not, there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, their resolve and discipline should be commended.

The Should-Be Silent Observers: If one is an atheist and chooses to take part in Christmas, the least that can be asked from these folks is that they do not speak ill of the religion on all the other days of the year. Therefore, if one chooses to be an atheist and celebrate Christmas, it would seem reasonable that they be silent, or at least much less publicly vocal about either

A. Their lack of respect for the Christian faith or
B. Their zeal for Christmas

But to repeatedly and constantly poke fun at Christians and then repeatedly and constantly talk and post about how joyous the Christmas season is….that’s a head scratcher and is worthy of being a head smasher. To constantly mock Christianity and then celebrate its biggest holiday is a most prime example of one wanting to have their cake and eat it, too. Because yes, Christmas is a CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY! DEAL WITH IT! And that is an undeniably obvious fact that in spite of all the commercialism, nostalgia, and secular ornamentation that come with the season, even atheists HAVE to believe.

What We Learned From UFC 193’s Main Event

In the aftermath of the stunning finish to UFC 193, let us take a step back and look at what we have learned from the event. No, not about Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, or even the sport of MMA. Let’s look at what we have learned about the fans of the sport:

1. The number of uneducated fight fans is staggering.

Following Holly Holm’s defeat over Marion Reneau, I had a conversation with my brother, who is a new fan to MMA. In our conversation, he asked me if Ronda Rousey was beatable. I replied that the only competitor I could see beating her was a fighter named, “Holly Holm.” In watching Holm’s UFC fights, and being knowledgeable about her boxing and kickboxing pedigree, it was obvious to me that her size, ring awareness, reach advantage, and striking ability would present such a unique challenge to Ronda that it wouldn’t be a huge upset if she knocked her off. If I myself were an oddsmaker, I would have placed Rousey as a -420 favorite over her. Still a sizable favorite, but certainly not in the four-figure range. I did not expect Holm to get the title shot so soon, but when it was announced on Good Morning America, I rejoiced. I knew that this was the best possible matchup to be made and would without a doubt be Rousey’s biggest challenge to date. Dana White said it. Rousey herself said it. But practically no “fight fan” believed it. “It’s too soon,” they said. “She’s not ready,” they said. “They’re just giving Rousey easy opponents to feed the machine,” they said. All the while, I just looked on in amazement of how so-called fans of a sport could be so ignorant. For everyone who said she didn’t deserve the fight, my question is, “Why??” Women’s MMA is still so young that less fights are needed to score a title shot. Her record coming into the fight was 9-0, which is the same record Bethe Correia had prior to her clash with Rousey. Her overall fighting experience (counting her boxing career) is more than any of Ronda’s previous opponents. And most importantly, I am convinced that these fans did not take the time to really study up on Holm and her skill set. And if they did, that makes their ignorance all the more astounding, because anyone with any MMA IQ could see that Holm presented a brand new challenge to Rousey. Holm’s fighting style made it evident that Rousey wouldn’t just bum-rush her and take her down. Holm is too adept defensively and too great at maintaining distance. I, like the rest of the general public, expected Rousey to win. I thought Rousey would problem-solve and use her will to win and grappling skills to eventually score the victory. Others thought this was another “easy fight.” As Dana White himself has pointed out about his own fan base, the majority of fans simply have no idea what they are talking about. Which would be OK. But then to take to social media and message boards and spread your ignorance and let it infect others…that is when we have a problem. Fight fans, please, stop before you hit “send” next time. And ask yourself, “Do I know what the fuck I’m talking about?” Then, ask yourself, “Am I sure?” And if there is any hesitation in any of the above responses, please, kindly filter yourself out of the conversation so that we can at least have less uneducated fans polluting the Internet.

2. In addition to being uneducated, many are apparently very duplicitous.

Prior to the fight, if you were to scroll the UFC Facebook page, you would see die-hard Ronda Rousey supporters, fans saying Holm had absolutely no chance, and often a combination of the two. Any negative Rousey remark was few and VERY far between. Suddenly, after the fight, Rousey is, let’s see
– A Paper Champion
– A Hype Train that Got Exposed
– An overconfident, cocky egomaniac who got put in her place

Oh, and let’s not forget all of the fans who “knew this was going to happen” who were somehow invisible before the fight. Some of this is the result of the “Monday Morning QB” syndrome that is present in all sports mediums—both Internet fan and TV “expert” alike. However, it is not the points that are being made that are rebukeable. It is the fact that suddenly all posts are flooded with anti-Rousey comments when before the fight, there were almost none. This reminds me of the SpongeBob SquarePants episode when SpongeBob acquired a lot of wealth and everyone wanted to be around him because of his money and because he was on top of the world. But the moment he lost his money, the room instantly cleared out. You guys, and you know who you are…are fucking pathetic. Nobody likes a bandwagon fan, but the only thing worse than a bandwagon fan is a bandwagon diver. Someone who dives off the bandwagon the first chance they get. And then to make matters worse, they take delight in watching the same wagon that they were JUST ON implode. God do you disgust me.

The next time a fight is made, folks, research the fighters before you form and more importantly VOICE an opinion on it. Chances are it was made for a good reason. Also, if you are a fan of someone, continue to support them in good times and in bad, or at least allow your fanhood to fizzle away quietly. But to go from a bandwagon fan to a bandwagon diver and ultimately a bandwagon sabotager…well…that’s just plain despicable. Hopefully MMA fans will heed this advice; but the chances of that happening are much lower than the outrageous 15-to-1 odds Holm faced coming into the fight. If there is a silver lining in this, it’s that the true experts of the sport just showed the same ignorance as these repeat offenders. So…I’m saying there’s a chance.

*Mo State*

We,
Missouri State University,
Do solemnly swear.
After the work put in to earn this name,
to make everyone associated with it a proud member.
We will continue to allot funds for student scholarships, so that these students and every MSU Bear can come to Springfield and enhance themselves in our new 100,000 sq. ft. student recreation center and in our residence halls furnished with fitness rooms, computer labs, and a full-access community available beyond these designated spaces.
A community where you can follow your passion until you find your place.
Whether it is a place on our championship handball team with ten national championships, or perhaps it is in our society of Public Affairs—where we are defined as Citizen Scholars—such as the statue affront Strong Hall. In the fabrics of citizenship, equality, and democracy—
We have woven a
Strong Wall.
This wall will extend
Brick by Brick
Until we have created a Brick City.
Where the bricks are more than clay & concrete—
But
Concrete Ideas
That Flow

Concrete Ideas that just Go

In a dynamic community of
Innovation
Design
Entrepreneurship
&
Art….
An opportunity utopia where everyone has an idea and meets on this common ground.
Idea Commons.
No, Missouri, this is more than a pipe dream,
It is a dream that is coming down the pike…
And oh, this community will thrive on your visions,
Your art,
Our Pride:
Missouri’s students.
This has passed the “idea” stage…
We will see that through Springfield,
The world will be your stage.
No, Missouri,
That is not our idea,
That
is
Our Promise.

*University of Central Missouri*

Choose Red, and you will empower your life,
Your name will go far even after the black,
In the roulette of colleges in sight—
Bet on the Red and Black.
Own your own enterprise like David Steward,
Be stubborn for your dreams like a mule to a herder,
Mancow dispatched to Chicago as a Missourian reward,
We must follow & push the envelope further.
At Central, we give the Mules their kicks,
Lending their push to lead a kick start,
Go on to be Bachelors with a Master’s wits,
The world is your target, your diploma—the dart.
After graduation you’ll be prepared to be—
After Learning to a Greater Degree.

*Truman State University*

Sons of Truman State take on our name from Beloved Truman,
In the Purple & White—The Bulldogs will bathe,
Like our Forefathers of tested, well-to-do men.
They knew before a man can give a good example,
He first must pass the tests that lie ahead,
Then the wisdom of the father will develop ample,
Following the Missouri son whose example said:
The race depends on this collective education—
Books of history that abruptly become new,
Don’t shut off the lamps of knowledge—collect & case them,
Soon the torch from the light will belong to you.
Then the torch of wisdom will pass to your sons,
As ordained in the dreams of our favorite son.

*Wash. U.*

We Believe
“Happiness and Moral Duty are inseparably connected.”
Fair Washington, Our Home—
For the virtuous & eclectic.
Sweet are these halls of blended lights endowed in truth,
Blessed Hearts
keep these days—
Days of yore & days of youth.
Eternity is the straw for which we draw the times of awe;
In Honor,
We hold thy august name
firmly taut in the Bear Claw.
Through honest minds and wary tongues
We rest sound with what we achieve,
Strength is solely gathered through truth;
Our Fair Washington,
We Believe.
