The Evergreen State Poem (Alma Mater Vol 3: The West)

*The Evergreen State College*

This is the college of the Evergreen State,
Where rain and Geoducks make the crops rotate,
A hotbed where contemplative minds collaborate,
And professors are known to be of the first rate.

Yes, this is the college called the Evergreen State,
Trees and Green far too wide to numerate,
Leave no regrets, now, before it’s too late,
Let it all Hang starting from the first date.

Let it all go, these four years will not wait,
Free is the trait of the Evergreen State.

Michigan Tech Poem (Alma Mater Vol. 1: The Midwest)

*Michigan Tech*

My, what lakes the mind can surf
With all the discoveries
We find;
At Michigan Tech, we inspect global turf,
The Land of Opportunity:
We mine.
We build ice sculptures from creative fires—
Husky Fires
Glow in the snow,
The Houghton icescape is
The Great Escape,
A Winter Carnival
The Huskies know.
This is a safe haven for a Parade of Nations
Waving their heritage with gold salutations;
K-Day, Hockey, Skating, and Love, are some of
Houghton’s oldest celebrations.
Celebrate your curiosity,
Celebrate yourself,
Celebrate the purity of Michigan
Itself,
Drink another beer, then down another seven,
Drink while you can,
There’s no Beers in Heaven.
Here’s to Engineers
Who will lead the recovery
of
The Land of Opportunity
for
Generations of Discovery.

Starts the spark in our bonfire hearts”

University of Louisiana at Lafayette Poem (Alma Mater Vol. 4: The South)

*University of Louisiana at Lafayette*

Lafayette Welcomes You,
You mayn’t feel it now,
but you shall soon,
So when you are feeling all at sea:
Prepare for the battery.

Festivity: Happily, Boldly,
Creole life resides
Faithfully;
School Spirit,
Love & Yet More Love,
And Lagniappe Week:
You’ll get a little extra

Pagin’ Ragin’ Cajuns.
Bring this lost life home,

With instruments that are sure to bring out the Red,
And carry him into the White:

He’ll not only be brought to,
But with the Cajuns he’ll be taught to,
Seize this new life gave
&
Rage.

Alive

Two songs of the same title of the same year, both seeping with the same agenda evident found in their lyrics and at their cores: both songs want the listener to feel alive.

One of the things I find beautiful about this is that it symbolizes that your liveness does not interfere with another’s. These two songs could make the same person feel peak alive, and both songs have surely made different people feel more alive than the other. But what might intuitively seem to be a competitive environment often is not. Music is but one beautiful example of that.

There’s more than enough life to go around. And there’s enough gust from music to make us all feel alive whenever we need that feeling the most or just want the rush.

Afterlife

“Afterlife, oh my God, what an awful word
After all the breath and the dirt
And the fires that burn
And after all this time
And after all the ambulances go
And after all the hangers-on are done
Hanging on to the dead lights
Of the afterglow”

17 Crimes

“If I wasn’t so cold
We couldn’t freeze this moment.” -AFI

It’s perhaps the coldest words and moments that freeze in us the most.
And the survival of the coldest seasons still becomes encoded in our DNA.

University of Rochester Poem (Alma Mater Vol 2: The Northeast)

*U of R*

(Set to the Melody of “Some Nights” by fun.)

Some Nights I Stay Up
Tweaking hard on Starbucks,
Cramming to pass the vital laps.
Some Nights I wish that
Rochester had White Castle,
Boy I sure crave those tasty sacks.

But I still wake up,
And now it’s time to test,
Oh Lord,
Give me a sign…
Me-li-or-aaa…

What Does It Stand For?
What Does That Stand For?

Bad Sign.
I Forgot…

Any moooo-oore?
Ohhh-whoaaa-oh!
Ohhh-whoaaa-oh!
Ohoh!

Whoaaa-oh!
Whoa-ohhhhh-oh!
Whoa-ohhhh-oh!
Whoaoh!

This is it, guys,
U of R!
The anthem of who you are!
Let’s get the troops and rally for
D-Dayyyyyyy

Eastman is best, Believe the Hype!
The Ramblers
Sing Through Midnight,
The music here is quite alright,
Yo,
Don’t even try
To Jack Our Style…

That’s not alright.

You can still go to a show tonight,
Though you’re not this good your school can always
Try. Try. Try.

Ayyyeee-ay-aye
That’s Humble Pie.
Mmm…
Mmm…

Well,
Some nights I wish that
The snow would end,
Come Winterfest, there always is a change.

And some nights,
I’m scared to eat at The Pit,
Some nights, you just can’t win.
Can’t win…

But I still wake up,
I still see the sign,
Oh Lord,
I still forgot
What Meliora stands for…

What Does It Stand For?
What Does That Stand For?

How can…
I not knowww!??!

Oh, Come onnnnn…

So this is it?
I left my home for this?
Took out a bunch of loans for this?
Put mom and dad in debt for this?

Yes.
Here I see stars, I see, Yellowjacket stars that’s what they are,
And when I hear songs…

They read like this one, so
Come Onnnnnnnnnnn
Oh, Come Onnnnnnnnnn
Aw, Come Onnnnnnnnnn
OH, Come Onnnnnnnnnn

WELL,
This is it guys,
That is all!
If I could go back I’d do it again,
I’d do ten years of this
And hope my counselor understands!
This is why I left my home,
Sorry to bail, Mom, I had to go,
Who the fuck wants to stay at home
And miss out on this righteous fun?

My heart breaks for anybody
Who got stuck in other schools,
When I looked up and saw the sign…
Man you wouldn’t believe…
It all came back to me…

I remember-er-err…

Me-lio-raaaaaahaaaahaaahh. aaaahahah..ahhahhhaaah.
Bet-terrr.
Ahhahhhaahhh..ahhaaaaah–ah-ahuhAhahAhuhUhuh

Ohhh-whoaaa!
Ohh-whoaaa-oh!
Ohhh-whoaaa-oh!
Ohoh!

Whoaaa-oh!
Whoa-ohhhhh-oh!
Whoa-ohhhh-oh!
Whoaoh!

The other night you wouldn’t believe
The dream that I had about you and me!
We got into Harvard but then we agreed…

Rochester is way better…

Rochester is Always Beeettterrr…

We knew Rochester is Beeeetterrrr…

This sign told me Rochester is
Ever Better.

Humboldt State University Poem (Alma Mater Vol. 3: The West)

*Humboldt State University*

Oh, it’s a sunlit California afternoon in the middle of April,
And this car full of Humboldt State students
Cannot think of a better day to go on a long road trip.

They were on their way to the annual Coachella festival 12 hours away,
but with the mixtape blowing with different stages of the wind,
The concert has started early.

Four windows are rolled down
&
15 sprite fingers are out tickling the six-string of spring.
Five bodies are free bound
In the Crown Victoria and to the music they all sing.

12 hours never rolled by so fast.
Making it all the easier to press repeat.

Possibly the greatest part of listening to a beloved track is hitting repeat,
And perhaps the best part of a road trip among friends is knowing that
As much you may want to hit rewind, these wheels continue to roll forward…

Making this the ideal time to keep playing.

Each of these seconds feel so Live
and wired for the sound of conversations, comfortable silences, and stillness for the interceptions of wind and music.

No, 12 hours never rolled by so fast.
Making it all the easier to hit repeat.

The trip is now pulled into reverse and a new mixtape is put in the player.
Yes, the journey is usually the trip, but the anticipation of these Lumberjacks to arrive at their destination is very real.
As real as the moments in Muddy’s, Farmer’s Markets at the Plaza, and in the Quad
Where just a few people dance just as alive as the thousands upon thousands that plug Indio.

Moments in the tranquil forest where in the studio of nature, we find a new release.

There is no place as inspiring as a daily trip through the redwoods of Humboldt State.

And that is all the inspiration these roadsters need to
Hit repeat for another 12 hours
To return to the point where they belong;
The high point of the road weekend’s song
Where they crash back home.

Uconn Poem (Alma Mater Vol. 2: The Northeast)

*UConn*

Sons of Connecticut,
Beget!
Spawn a legacy
they shall never forget!
Navy Men,
Defend this court,
Let invaders know
This is our sport.

Hold the colors steady and strong,
The Navy & White outlined with red,
Hoist banners of years waged & conquered,
A testament to Husky men who have led:

Commanders like Ollie & Jim Calhoun,
Who in strategy’s belly are always consumed,
Minding the notes of the cadence of shots,
Assuring Huskies have positions assumed.

Captains like Allen, Gordon, and Walker
Remained on guard as UConn’s floor generals,
Forwards like Hamilton aimed and let it Rip,
Finding the targets & winning in general.

Huskies salute to
Connecticut’s sons,
Inside of Ted’s
and
Huskies Bar,
A river meets the mouth at King Hill Road,
Turn-up louder, yell where we are:

A party school with full provisions,
The constitution’s haven within bombs’ bursts,
UConn, found in Storrs, Connecticut:
The Center of the College Basketball Universe.

~ ~

Daughters of Connecticut,
Beget!
Birth a legacy
they shall never forget!
Navy Women,
Defend this court,
Let invaders know
This is our sport.

Joining the men to rule this nation,
Our women in total have won nine banners,
Breaking the record and still vying for more,
Enshrining the dome—Queens of the manor.

Showing basketball’s not just a king’s court,
With the co-ed dynasty of this sport.
Reigning together in 2004,
And in 2014 every adversary
Fell to the Queens who rejoined the Kings:

The 10-Year Royal Anniversary.

The commander of this fleet is Geno Auriemma,
Drilling firm habits into his platoon,
Directing the best win streak in college hoops,
At streak’s end, the winning resumes.

Captains like Ralph, Bird, Taurasi,
Remained on guard as UConn’s team leaders,
Lobo and Walters—Front and Center!
They kept us #1 as the game’s top-seeders.

Huskies salute to
Connecticut’s daughters,
And the best coach ever in women’s by far,
A steady rumstorm befalls the head in The Jungle,
Turn-up louder, yell where we are:

A party school with full provisions,
The constitution’s haven within bombs’ bursts,
Storrs, Connecticut: Home of the Huskies,
Center of the College Basketball Universe…

A space documented and well celebrated,
A legacy our
Sons and Daughters
Created.
