Marquette University Creative Piece

From Alma Mater Vol. 1: The Midwest. Available Now!

The difference with Marquette is who we are…
And also what we aim to be.
It’s where we’ve been.
The Omni in Atlanta, Georgia,
Decorated as winners of the 1977 NCAA Championship.
Voyages through the Wisconsin and Mississippi River,
Abaft the legacy of the Marquette-Jolliet fleet.
On M.A.P. trips throughout the country,
providing service to communities in need.
On to limitless boundaries that embrace inclusion and new methods of learning.
At the Miracle on Westowne Square, beneath the lights of St. Joan’s Christmas Tree…
Then back again on Tuesday for Mass.
We always begin at the Mass of the Holy Spirit, where we’re granted with the strength to reflect through Mission Week
and on the guidance of our Ignatian heritage.

What makes us different is what we’ve done.

Selling out the BMO Harris Bradley Center,
Jam-Packed into a basketball heaven,
With every common student afire with God.
We Ring out Ahoya!
To remind visitors whose house this is.
We run to the lake to celebrate mammoth victories,
And when we travel west to Madison,

We Cross the Red Sea.

We proceed to walk & run for Briggs & Al, and have enough stamina in our hearts to run at Midnight to combat hunger and homelessness—
Along with a delivery of the Marquette Special to help keep them warm.
Some believe winning and success are indistinguishable. That there is no separation in this marriage.
We believe that winning is the sweet joy of having trophies raised in victory, while success is measured by helping others raise themselves.
To us the latter result is so much sweeter.

That is the difference.

University of South Dakota Poem

From Alma Mater Vol. 1: The Midwest. Available Now!

On a mid-February day in the heart of mating season,
A Coyote approached with red and white adorned,
Not to hunt but to appeal to reason.
He knew
Love is often timid like a coy dog,
Until the right hybrid like a coydog,
The Yotes formed a band & made a pact,
Then jumped the broom like a game of leapfrog.
They met on South Dakota’s vermilion plains
And solidified this pact—near The Old Main.
Right in Danforth Chapel they said each vow—
With an ardent and tender howl.
The Coyote is sly, cunning, and dangerous,
He can rip open the heart with lethal tears,
Like when the Coyote told the beautiful stranger,
“Coyotes work best in pairs.”
And from that day forward they roamed as one,
In gentle habits as well as hunting Jackrabbits,
It takes a heavy heart to fill the hunger of a Coyote,
And in South Dakota, there’s no heart like a Coyote’s.
Twenty years have passed and these Coyotes still bleed
South Dakota Red and South Dakota White,
Now they have returned—not as students,
But as Coyotes—Husband & Wife.
They return to the Homecoming plains,
Beneath the first beams of their love’s great rays,
Though many years have passed, it all remains,
They still love these great
Dakota Days.

South Dakota State University Poem

South Dakota carries frequent forecasts
that fall far below zero. Record-breaking winters
with severe snowstorms, blizzards, and whiteouts
that bend the mind to the chilling degree that even
South Dakotans have reservations about completing their reservations
To inhabit the SDSU reservation.
Welcome, New Jackrabbits,
Have no fear,
The Gate to Greatness—
Begins here.

It begins in Meadows North,
Meadows South,
Abbott and Brown Hall
At the mouth,
Through corn fields
Supple with loyal hue,
The yellow & blue
Will guide you through.
At the heart of the most ferocious climate,
The warmth that resides will help you climb it.
High enough to view faces from today and yesterday
During the celebration of Hobo Day.
Allow the Bummobile to be your snowmobile
To help you travel through our proud tradition,
The Coughlin Campanile will help inspire you
To reach the summit of life’s exhibition.
Ring the Bell! Cheer for South Dakota!
South Dakota State has a combusting engine
That lights a March through the snowy path,
In this fire
We gather the wrath;
Make Way
for
The Pride of the Dakotas.

These words can be found on the marker at the Ohio University Class Gateway:
“Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.”
Well,
God knows that it is necessary to find happiness.
And the promise of our college experience isn’t dependent on the government and is not limited to just our education.
We encourage all graduating high-school seniors to come to Athens.
Our generation has been called the Voices of Promise,
So believe when we tell you your life will forever be changed.
But these moments won’t last forever.

So our mortality conflicts with our morality.

Now let’s party.

University of Toledo

From Alma Mater Vol. 1: The Midwest. Available Now!

We’ve been called a ghost town…considered buried—
An underground Army.
We were left for dead in 1917 after our first game:
A crushing 145-0 defeat.
But our
Battle Rockets
Have exploded from the ground:
The Rockets of Toledo, Ohio—

Look out for the great
Torpedo.

Exploding through the Glass City and taking the shattered fragments and constructing a buoyant campus life as enchanting as the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion and the Beaux-Arts style that captures our Rockets and allows us to burst in an assembly of True Blue along with the animation of the Blue Crew to show that the University of Toledo has broken through. From the underground there is a tumbling sound—of an army over 20,000 strong that rallies the Rockets along.
The RMB is making noise in roll step to Funk on the Ottawa;
The band is the cadence of UT—marching aside the beautiful Rockettes in blue & gold glee.
The Rockettes are the first dance team in the nation,
Joining RMB to step in celebration
Of another victory coming for Toledo:

Here comes another Torpedo.

Since our 1917 crushing, we’ve attacked back with
Thirteen conference titles and five division titles,
The Toledo Rockets are hitting the MAC scene,
And our main target is Bowling Green.
Destructive like a lightweight Mark 46,
Hit the land target then a field goal
After 6.
In formations like the 27th Army Air Crew,
The Rockets shake the ground with UT’s Blue Crew.
This is a strong base with 20,000 in tow,
&
If this is considered underground…
Student foundations better

i once had vigor.
life, salubrity.
now it feels like any day could be my last.
i lay in prostration more’an any inpatient. life so flat it feels i’ll flatline any time. i’m ailed by a venom,
a toxic contagion. please, grace,
retrieve me .

Put Away that Scalpel!
There’s been a change of plans!
Take away those tubes!
He’s about to stand!
Unplug that EKG — Stop writing on those sheets!
Turn off all those monitors!
His heart’s about to beat!
Reshelf the Defibrillator!
There’s no longer any need!
Take off those Masks!
Now we All can breathe!
Throw away them needles! And Save us All the Sight! You only need her Smile — It brought Me back to life .

I know what you’re going through.
I know how you feel.
I Would be there for you—
I too feel what you don’t feel.
I too yearn to be touched—
Understood.
Loved.
Yes I do know how you feel —
You’re not the Only 1.

I feel your S .O .S .—
But I can’t be the one to
Save You…
I can’t see it,
Find You,
Touch You…
But I can empathize with you.
We are Companions and
Don’t Even Know It—
Just because we don’t Know Each Other.

We still share an Empty Room,
That makes us mates in Bloom.

*I Held a Lorikeet Today*

I Held a Lorikeet Today—
Both
Free
to
Hold
Its Wings…
My open palm seizes the moment
This warm season graciously
Brings.
I expected
Another quotidian day,
In a prosaic site tinctured in gray,
When in from the Wind
Flew In—
A Pop Fly
Like a stray Blue Jay.
My hand was as still as the air,
As un-shifting as my beholden stare.
I admiringly hawked at its wings—
Each
Assorted
Prismatic
Shade.
As the sun beamed down on us,
I knew I had it made
In the Shade.
This was a once in a lifetime sight,
And I had the perfect bird’s-view.

I captured these six seconds,
And held it for the rest of the day.

My face had a serene tint,
In-Hidden a camouflaged grin…
Although I knew it’d soon fly away…

And I’d sit alone again.

You don’t control what I do,
And this isn’t
“Giving you Lip…”
Just because we’re Kin,
Doesn’t Mean
We’re Joined
At the Hip.

I may still roost in the nest,
But my mind is free to Wander.
You can take back the key,
But you can’t lock creativity.

Success hatches your biggest fans,
While Obscurity hosts these same Cynics .
I may have come out the gate last…
But with one fat check:
You’re following My footsteps.
The scent of cash is strong,
Like a Wolfpack that smells their
Own Blood.
You brought me to this planet,
but my Expression is Agamic.
But Sometimes Expression has Costs
That not even Cash can Change:

It is Family that cuts a Budding Adult,
who would have gladly opened her blouse…
It is Family that changes a lyric—
Reducing A Booming Voice to a squeak of a mouse.

I will not change even one word,
Or a single letter in-between these pages,
You’re either with me or you’re against me:
A sentiment I’d pass down to generations
For Ages.
